About - Tunnel Luminance Monitor

Tunnel luminance monitors are specialized devices installed at the entrances and exits of highway tunnels. They monitor the brightness (luminance) outside the tunnel and work in conjunction with the tunnel’s lighting control system to automatically adjust the lighting inside the tunnel. By continuously monitoring brightness levels, tunnel luminance monitors ensure a smooth transition for drivers entering and exiting tunnels, thereby reducing the risk of sudden changes in visibility.

Advantages

The RS-TCD-N01-1-T tunnel luminance monitor is used to monitor the average luminance of tunnel entrances and their surrounding environment. It can monitor the average luminance within a 20-degree angle within a standard range of 0~7000 cd/m², with a measurement accuracy of ±5%. The detector has a tubular metal housing and houses a high-precision optical measurement unit. After filtering, its response characteristics are similar to those of the human eye. The detector exhibits perfect linear response within its measurement range and instantaneous response to changes in light intensity.

Features

  1. Our tunnel luminance monitor features a fully sealed design, making it dustproof, waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and oxidation-resistant. Its high protection level allows it to operate normally even in harsh environments such as outdoor exposure to direct sunlight, rain, dust accumulation, and sudden temperature changes.
  2. It incorporates a high-precision measurement unit, and the optical probe adopts a standard monitoring angle design with spectral response characteristics closely matching human visual perception, effectively avoiding detection deviations. Before leaving the factory, it undergoes multi-point precise calibration, exhibiting excellent linear detection accuracy, accurately measuring even subtle changes in illumination, with stable data and minimal error.
  3. This tunnel luminance monitor can continuously measure for 24 hours, with real-time data updates without delay. It is compatible with 4~20mA and RS485 dual signal outputs, and also includes an additional switch output. It can easily connect to lighting control systems and IoT platforms, enabling automatic brightness monitoring and lighting control without manual intervention, effectively improving management efficiency and reducing operating costs.
  4. The core sensing element of the tunnel luminance monitor has an ultra-long service life and no moving parts, avoiding mechanical wear. Equipped with an intelligent data compensation algorithm, it can automatically correct detection errors caused by ambient temperature and humidity, as well as slight dust accumulation on the lens, eliminating the need for frequent calibration during long-term use.
  5. It employs dedicated EMC anti-interference devices, enabling it to withstand various strong electromagnetic interferences from on-site frequency converters and other sources.

Applications

Our tunnel luminance monitor is an intelligent tunnel illuminance monitoring device developed in accordance with the “Specifications for Design of Ventilation and Lighting in Highway Tunnels” and CIE tunnel lighting measurement standards. It measures the luminance signal at the tunnel entrance using a high-precision optical sensor, processes the data through an embedded microprocessor, and outputs accurate luminance data. It can be integrated with a tunnel luminance control system to automatically adjust the internal lighting brightness of the tunnel, effectively avoiding driving safety issues caused by sudden visual changes. Our tunnel luminance monitor is widely used in highway tunnels, urban tunnels, and mountain tunnels, and can continuously monitor the luminance at the tunnel entrance.

FAQs - Tunnel Luminance Monitor

Why is illuminance monitoring crucial for tunnel safety?

Monitoring the brightness inside highway tunnels is critical for driver safety. If the brightness outside the tunnel is significantly higher than the lighting inside, drivers may experience a sudden change in vision, known as the “black hole effect.” This can lead to temporary blindness and potentially cause traffic accidents within the tunnel.
These systems help maintain consistent visibility and improve road safety by dynamically adjusting tunnel lighting based on real-time illuminance readings.

Illuminance monitors are used to measure the light intensity inside a tunnel. Unlike luminance monitors, which assess external brightness, illuminance monitors focus on ensuring that the lighting inside the tunnel meets necessary safety standards. By continuously measuring light levels, these monitors help maintain optimal visibility for drivers, thereby reducing reaction time and the probability of collisions.

The Renkeer tunnel luminance monitor integrates optical detection, signal processing, data transmission, and intelligent adaptation functions. Unlike the traditional coarse control mode of manual inspection and fixed-level lighting, it achieves refined, automated, and intelligent control of tunnel brightness. The tunnel luminance monitor has the advantages of high measurement accuracy, fast response, strong adaptability, and stable operation, and can be used for a long time in outdoor and semi-enclosed harsh environments.

First, install the tunnel luminance meter onto the matching bracket. Then, use hose clamps to attach the bracket to the 76mm pole.
Note: The tunnel luminance meter should be installed at a driving line of sight from the tunnel entrance. The detector’s probe must be precisely aligned with the center of the tunnel entrance to ensure accurate and reliable luminance data collection and transmission. The driving line of sight should be determined according to local laws and regulations.
