View - Optical Tipping Bucket Rainfall Sensor
This optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor utilizes optical and pulse principles to measure rainfall. When raindrops fall onto the sensor’s tipping bucket, the change in the bucket’s tilt angle triggers the internal optical components to generate a signal, accurately capturing the rainfall amount. Designed to be compact and lightweight, the sensor can be easily held in one hand, making it convenient to carry and install. To meet the diverse requirements of different application scenarios, we offer two model options for your selection.
RS-FYL-*-1-EX
This optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor is a single-function device designed exclusively for monitoring rainfall data. It supports two output options: RS485 and pulse signal. The sensor operates with high sensitivity and minimal measurement error. Its housing features a compact, fully enclosed structure with no moving parts, ensuring zero mechanical wear and a long service life.
RS-FYLGZ-N01-1-EX
This type is a combined rainfall and light intensity sensor, integrating both rainfall measurement and illuminance detection functions. This model supports RS485 output only. It is equipped with a high-precision photosensitive sensor for accurate light intensity measurement, with output values expressed in lux. At the same time, it reliably and sensitively detects changes in rainfall.
Features
1. Compared with traditional mechanical rain gauges, the optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor is more compact, lightweight, and easier to install.
2. Low power consumption design for enhanced energy efficiency.
3. High reliability, capable of stable operation in high-temperature and high-humidity environments.
4. Arc-shaped design prevents fallen leaves from obstructing the sensor top.
5. Utilizes optical and pulse-based rainfall measurement for greater accuracy.
6. Optional integration with light intensity monitoring, featuring a high-precision photosensitive sensor with a measurement range of 0–200,000 Lux.

FAQs - Optical Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge
How to install the optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor?
- To ensure accurate measurements, the optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor should be installed in an open area free from any obstructions above or around the installation site.
- You can use the mounting bracket provided by us. First, attach the rain sensor to the bracket using four M435 stainless steel 304 screws and nuts. Then, fix the bracket to the installation surface, which must have pre-drilled holes of φ5 mm. Ensure the bracket is mounted horizontally. Finally, secure the bracket in place using three M410 stainless steel 304 screws and nuts.
- If you choose not to use the bracket, you may install the sensor directly by aligning with the positions and dimensions of the four copper studs on the sensor base.
What is the wiring method?
- For RS485 Output Type:
Brown wire: Connect to power positive (9–30V DC)
Black wire: Connect to power ground
Yellow wire: Connect to RS485 A (Data+)
Blue wire: Connect to RS485 B (Data−) - For Pulse Output Type:
Brown wire: Connect to power positive (10–30V DC)
Black wire: Connect to power ground
Green wire: Connect to pulse output NO (Normally Open)
White wire: Connect to pulse output COM (Common)

- M4*35 Screws × 4
- M4*10 Screws and Nuts × 3
- Warranty Card & Certificate of Conformity × 1
How to maintain the optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor?
If the optical tipping bucket rainfall sensor is used outdoors in harsh environments for extended periods, regular surface cleaning is necessary. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe the device’s exterior. For continuous operation, it is recommended to clean the sensor once a month, and at a minimum, at least once every three months.
What are the applications of the optical tipping bucket rain gauge?
This optical tipping bucket rain gauge is widely used in scenarios requiring rainfall and light intensity monitoring, such as maritime navigation, weather stations, automatic doors and windows, and geological disaster monitoring.
How to view the data?
- You can use an RS485 to USB converter to upload data to the monitoring software provided by our company for real-time data visualization.
- Alternatively, you can use your own RS485-to-TTL/232 module to upload data to a microcontroller or PLC.
- If you need to monitor data from multiple rain sensors simultaneously, you may purchase our collector or environmental monitoring host. These devices can upload data to our free cloud platform, enabling real-time access via mobile app or PC.
